Bangladesh Bank (BB) said on Sunday it would conduct any separate investigation into financial irregularity allegations against former president Mohammed Shahabuddin as it inspects the financial institutions.
It, however, said its investigation was carried out as part of regulatory oversight of banks, rather than targeting specific individuals.
The former president had been associated with Global Islami Bank and Islami Bank, and any investigation by the central bank would focus on the institutions concerned, said Mr. Arief Hossain Khan, BB spokesperson, talking to reporters on the day at the BB HQs.
The central bank spokesperson made the clarification following a report by a private channel claiming that the central bank would not investigate allegations against Shahabuddin.
Speaking to the FE, Mr. Khan said: "We don't carry out inspection against any person, rather we do on institutions through our regular inspections".
He said the banks would identify who were involved in irregularities, not the regulator.
"We will investigate if there is any irregularity in the bank. We will not target any individual for investigation," Mr. Khan told the FE.
Talking to reporters, the spokesperson reiterated that Bangladesh Bank's investigation was conducted as part of its supervisory and regulatory responsibilities.
He also noted that commercial banks were subject to audits by their own internal auditors, Bangladesh Bank and external auditors.
"The central bank will not do this targeting any specific individual. There is no scope for it to be working with special priority or by targeting someone," he went on.
