Prof Abul Quasem Fazlul Huq passes away

Prof Abul Quasem Fazlul Huq, an eminent writer, researcher, academic and president of Bangla Academy, passed away at a hospital in Dhaka on Sunday at the age of 85.

According to family sources, Prof Huq had gone to a restaurant in Mirpur for a family gathering in the afternoon when he suddenly fell ill. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

Born in Pakundia village in Kishoreganj on September 30, 1940, Prof Huq devoted much of his academic career to the Department of Bangla at the University of Dhaka, where he served as a professor.

He was widely admired for his contributions to Bangla literature, literary criticism, society, politics and culture. His books and scholarly works earned recognition both at home and abroad.

Besides his academic and literary pursuits, Prof Huq played a key role as an editor, overseeing the publication of several important books and literary journals.

In recognition of his outstanding contributions to Bangla literature, Prof Huq was awarded the Bangla Academy Literary Award in 1981.

BSS adds: Prime Minister Tarique Rahman expressed deep shock and sorrow at the death of Prof Abul Quasem Fazlul Huq.

In a message of condolence, he said the country has lost an eminent educationist and writer at the death of Prof Huq. His death created a vacuum in the country's arena of education which will never be filled easily.

The prime minister prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed profound sympathy to the bereaved family members.
