The privately owned SS Power Plant at Gondamara in Chattogram's Banshkhali started commercial production from its second unit on Sunday evening, the company said in a statement.

The first unit of SS Power Plant began commercial production on September 18, the statement said. The entire 1,320-MW power plant is now commercially producing electricity for the national grid.

However, according to the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB), SS Power generated around 365 MW of electricity on October 23, which is less than one-third of its total generation capacity.

A high-level delegation of the BPDB visited the plant on October 19 before the start of commercial production.

"This is very happy news for us. With the cooperation of the BPDB and all concerned, we have been able to start commercial production of the second unit of SS Power Plant," SS Power Plant Chief Financial Officer Ibadat Hossain Bhuiyan said on the occasion.

The 1,320 MW coal-based thermal power plant in Banshkhali was connected to the national grid on January 14 this year, said the company.

Its first unit started trial production on May 24 and the second unit went into trial production on June 28.

SS Power Plant is jointly owned by Chattogram-based industrial giant S Alam Group and Chinese companies Sepco 3 and HTG.

S Alam Group holds a 70 per cent stake in the plant, while the remaining 30 per cent is owned by the Chinese companies.

The plant was constructed at a cost of $2.6 billion (Tk280 billion), according to the company.

Once in full production, it will be able to supply about 29.3 million units of electricity per day and about 880 million units per month.

Separately, the 1,320 MW Rampal coal-fired power plant, also known as the Maitree Super Thermal Power Project, started the test run of its second unit on Tuesday. It generated around 935 MW of electricity on October 23, according to the BPDB.
