Veggie prices see further hike, while broiler price falls

Vegetable prices have further increased in the city kitchen markets while the price of broiler chicken has shown a decline.

Moringa, long-yard bean, colocasia stem and bitter gourd were sold at Tk 100-120 a kg on Monday, marking a Tk 10 hike further, said traders.

Pointed gourd, snake gourd, brinjal and cucumber cost Tk 70-80 per kg, while tomato, carrot, radish and country bean were selling at Tk 50-70 a kg on the day.

Vegetable vendor Nowbab Ali in the city's Beribadh-Rayerbazar area said papaya and pumpkin are the only veggies selling below Tk 60 a kg.

Prices increased 30-40 per cent at wholesale markets over the last one week - just before the Ramadan, he said.

Brinjal and cucumber witnessed a further hike compared to other vegetables amid rising demand for the items in the fasting month, he added.

Meanwhile, after reduction of the farm-level price of broiler chicken to Tk 195 a kg by major four poultry companies, retail prices of the bird started declining - the prices hit an all-time high of Tk 270-290 per kg just a week back.

Broiler was sold at Tk 230-250 a kg on Monday, according to kitchen market sources.

Jakir Talukder, a poultry trader at Atibazar in Keraniganj, said, "Farm-gate prices have been reduced to Tk 195 a kg and we are selling those at Tk 215-220 a kg to retail vendors in Dhaka markets."

However, the Sonali variety of chicken (popularly known as Pakistani Cock) and indigenous chicken remained static at previous highs of Tk 390-410 a kg and Tk 600-650 a kg respectively, said Alamgir Hossain, another vendor in the West Dhanmondi area.

He said the supply of such birds has declined notably in the market, contributing to the price hike.

Egg price almost maintained the previous high of Tk 140-145 a dozen on the day, according to city groceries.

However, beef, mutton, both cultured and indigenous fish, sugar, edible oil and other commodity prices remained stable at their previous highs.

Beef was sold at Tk 750-800 per kg, mutton (khasi) at Tk 1050-1,100, cultured pangas, tilapia, koi, ruhi, katla and kalbaus at Tk 220-500, and cultured pabda and tengra at Tk 550-600 a kg.

Indigenous katla and ruhi were sold at Tk 550-750 per kg based on size and quality.
