Dolphin conservation

BD approves action plan

The government endorsed a dolphin conservation action plan on Tuesday with a view to protecting the country's graceful aquatic mammal.

A meeting, chaired by environment, forest and climate-change minister Md Shahab Uddin, gave the go-ahead.

Fund management guideline, dolphin atlas and the management plan for Gangetic dolphin in Halda have also been approved with some amendments.

Mr Shahab said the dolphin conservancy plan would play an effective role in protecting dolphin population and their habitats in rivers and coastal areas.

The 'Dolphin Atlas in Bangladesh' will help people know about the whereabouts of Gangetic and Irrawaddy dolphins in winter.

The minister said the 'Management Plan for the Ganges River Dolphins in Halda River' would also serve as a guide for the authorities in dolphin conservation.

The 'Fund Management Guideline' is meant for proper use of the funds provided by the government and carrying out dolphin upkeep activities for a long time.

Deputy minister Begum Habibun Nahar, environment secretary Md Mostafa Kamal, additional secretary (admin) Iqbal Abdullah Harun, additional secretary (development) Ahmed Shamim Al Razi, joint secretary (development) Zakia Afroz and chief forest conservator Md Amir Hossain Chowdhury, among others, were present.
