BEA demands fair probe into violence

FE REPORT | July 27, 2024 00:00:00

Bangladesh Economic Association (BEA) demanded on Friday a fair investigation into the violent clashes that happened over the student movement for quota reform in government services.

The association also pressed for ensuring exemplary punishment to those responsible for the killing of protesting students and innocent people as well during the countrywide mayhem.

The BEA placed the demand in a statement issued on the day (July 26, 2024) signed by its president Dr Qazi Kholiquzzaman Ahmad and general secretary Dr Md Aynul Islam.

It said that the state-owned properties were vandalised and burnt and many people killed by a vested quarter during the quota reform movement across the country.

People of the country became frightened following violence and arson attacks during student movement that forced the government to impose curfew aiming to restoring normalcy, says the statement.

The BEA further said that normalcy started returning as the offices, banks, financial institutions resumed operations, raising a ray of hope that the situation would become normal and curfew would be lifted very soon.

"The demand for quota reform has been fulfilled. Now it is the responsibility for all to restore normalcy at all educational institutions," adds the statement.

The association called upon all to remain vigilant against all rumours.

It also called upon all pro-liberation forces to be united to foil anti-state conspiracies for building a sustainable democratic and economically developed Bangladesh.
