CUET shut sine die for protest over two students’ death

CHATTOGRAM, Apr 25: The Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET) has been closed for an indefinite period following the fourth day of protest over two students' death in a road accident.

The decision was made in an emergency meeting convened by the academic council on Thursday with vice-chancellor Prof Dr Mohammad Rafiqul Alam in the chair.

The CUET authorities also directed students to vacate residential halls within 9:00 am today (Friday).

CUET assistant director (PR) Mohammad Rashedul Islam said, "The academic council meeting made the decision on the closure of CUET. It also decided to make the halls vacant within Friday."

The CUET administration issued a notice, signed by register Prof Dr Humayon Kabir, suspending examinations and all other academic activities.

Male students were asked to vacate the halls by 5:00 pm on Thursday and female students by 9:00 am on Friday.

Two CUET students were killed in a road accident in Kaptai Selina Quader Chowdhury College area in Chattogram around 4:00 pm last Monday.

Following their deaths, agitated students blocked the Chittagong-Kaptai road near the CUET gate for four straight days demanding the bus driver's punishment.

Earlier on Tuesday, the Chattogram deputy commissioner held a meeting with all the parties at Chattogram Circuit House and took various decisions, including payment of compensation.
