CHATTOGRAM, Mar 28: Miscreants have abducted four Bangladeshi expatriates in Libya and demanded a ransom of Tk1.0 million for release of each.
The abductors sent video clips of torture on the victims to their families in Anwara upazila of Chattogram and demanded the ransom money.
Those abducted were identified as Md Washim (22), son of Nurul Alam; Borhan Uddin (19), son of Mojaher Meah; Jabedur Rahim (19), son of Abdur Rahim; and Naim Uddin (20), son of Jebol Hossain.
All the four hail from Gohira Bacha Meah Majir Ghat area in Raipur union under Anwara upazila.
Family members of the victims submitted an application to the Anwara upazila nirbahi officer seeking help.
Unpazila Nirbahi Officer Mohammed Istiak Imon said, "Family members of the victims have submitted a letter in this regard today (Thursday). I will talk with high-ups about how to help the victims."
According to the family members of the victims, Zahirul Islam, son of Mohammed Hossain of Gohira area, took Tk430,000 from each of the victims for sending them to Libya in February last.
The victims reached Libya on February 16 last. Later the agents demanded more money from the families of the victims.
Later, the agents held Md Washim, Borhan Uddin, Jabedur Rahim Rahim and Naim Uddin hostage on March 15 last and demanded Tk1.0 million each for their release.
Later, the families informed the matter to the upazila administration on Thursday seeking steps in this regard.
Abdur Rahim, father of victim Jabedur said, "I sold all gold ornaments of my family to send my son abroad. But, the brokers cheated us. Now, the kidnappers said that they will return my son if we can't give Tk1.0 millon as ransom. Where can I get so much money at the moment?"
Nashir Uddin, father of victim Washim said, "I was asked to send four lakh taka for four people yesterday (Wednesday). The kidnappers also sent video footage of torture on my son and other victims."
