Police arrest youth in city for threatening two with 'firearm'

Police arrested an 18-year-old with a 'pistol' on Wednesday after the teenager threatened two individuals with it and made an attempt to escape.

The incident occurred around 2:30 pm in the capital's Panthapath.

Assistant Commissioner (AC) (traffic) of the Dhanmondi Zone Rajib Gain said, "The weapon appeared to be real, though it did not contain any ammunition."

The arrestee, a resident of Mohammadpur and claiming to be a university student, insisted that he was carrying a toy pistol.

Police sources said a group of worshippers spotted the suspect first in a CCTV footage as the thief who was stealing a pair of shoes while the group were praying inside SIBL Foundation Hospital & Diagnostic Center.

Outside the hospital premises, two of the worshippers confronted the suspect who pulled the 'pistol' on them from his waist. Police handed the youth over to Kalabagan Police Station.

Meanwhile, a team from Mirpur Model Police Station arrested two individuals early Wednesday from Munshibari, north Pirerbagh in the capital's Mirpur for holding a person hostage and seeking ransom from his family.

The arrestees are: Md Nazmul Hasan (31) and Md Billal Prodhan (35).

One China-made axe, two sharp knives, three mobile sets and Tk 1,000 were also recovered from their possession.

The victim, Alamgir, a resident of Rangamati, became acquaintances with a resident of Mirpur's Munshibari through social media.
