Dwellers of Dhaka city got much-needed relief from the scorching heat on Monday as rain pelted the capital, bringing down temperatures and easing the discomfort caused by the recent heatwave.

The sudden showers, accompanied by gusty winds, cooled the streets and offered respite to residents who had been struggling with high humidity and soaring temperatures over the past few days.

Rainfall was reported in several areas of the city, including Badda, Agargaon, Khilgaon, Moghbazar, Malibagh, Shahjahanpur, Kamalapur and Farmgate.

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) predicted rain or thundershowers at one or two places over the Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions in the 24 hours from 6:00am on Monday.

Day temperatures are likely to remain nearly unchanged, while night temperatures may fall slightly, the forecast said.

The rain caught many residents off guard, creating transportation challenges for some. Many pedestrians were seen taking shelter under shop shades and in nearby markets.

The Met Office said the rainfall was the first of the year. It also forecast the possibility of rain in five divisions, including Dhaka.

A meteorologist said light rain may occur in some parts of the country today (Tuesday). He added that thundershowers are likely in the coming week.
