UN representatives inquire about steps to ensure ICT’s impartiality, transparency

FE REPORT
UN representatives on Sunday in the capital inquired the office of the chief prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) about steps taken to ensure transparency and impartiality in the trial process.
On the other hand, the office of the chief prosecutor has requested United Nations (UN) to continue its support for the tribunal's trial process.
Visiting the office, UN Resident Coordinator in Bangladesh Gwyn Lewis and Senior Human Rights Adviser at the UN Resident Coordinator's Office in Bangladesh Huma Khan, met Chief Prosecutor Tajul Islam, and also discussed issues of mutual interest related to justice, human rights, and accountability.
Later in a briefing, Tajul Islam disclosed the topics discussed.
He said, "We had an open discussion. The UN officials wanted to know about the current stage of trial and investigation processes. They asked whether we are facing any problems and whether we need any cooperation from the UN."
"We reiterated the need for holding training programmes for the ICT prosecution and investigation agency and said if the UN takes any step in this regard, it would be very helpful for us. We also requested to continue the UN's support for the trial process. She gave us assurance on training and technical support," the chief prosecutor also said.
Gwyn Lewis at the meeting emphasised the United Nations' commitment to supporting Bangladesh's efforts in advancing 'transitional justice' and ensuring accountability for past atrocities.
She highlighted the importance of the ICT's role in promoting justice and reconciliation, as well as its alignment with international human rights standards, Barrister Abdullah Al Noman, one of the prosecutors, said.
Tajul at the time provided an overview of the tribunal's progress, challenges and contributions to justice for the victims of crimes against humanity and war crimes committed during the War of Liberation.
He reiterated the tribunal's commitment to transparency and adherence to due process while delivering justice.
The tribunal is holding the trial of crimes against humanity, including genocide committed during the mass uprising held at July and August last year and disappearances and murders committed during the Awami League regime.
