BNP Standing Committee Member Salahuddin Ahmed has said a political party is attempting to withdraw from the upcoming elections in an effort to hinder the democratic transition, reports BSS.

He, however, warned that such attempts would be futile.

"Those who are trying to create obstacles to the democratic transition will never succeed. "We will not allow any such attempts. Democracy will surely be restored in the country,"he said.

The BNP leader made the remarks while speaking at a dialogue with families of enforced disappearances, jointly organised by Amra BNP Poribar and Mayer Dak at the China-Friendship Conference Centre in the capital on Saturday.

He said BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman recently postponed a planned tour of the northern region at the request of the Election Commission, which some parties and officials interpreted as a sign of BNP's weakness.

"It is wrong to consider BNP's politeness as a sign of weakness. Rather it is an effort to maintain gentleness and peace. BNP wants to advance democracy," Ahmed told the event.

The senior BNP leader said for a protracted period people lived under a monstrous state machine while now 'we are free from it'.

"We are speaking freely, standing in this Bangladesh, freed from fascism, regained through the blood of our children. Such sacrifice, such bloodshed, such self-immolation, was seen nowhere in the world," he said.

Ahmed said nobody must forget those who gave their lives to save the country from fascism.

Meanwhile, BNP Standing Committee Member Dr. AZM Zahid Hossain warned that any attempt by a political party to claim the achievements of the July Uprising for itself would fail.

The movement was a collective effort that involved BNP leaders, activists, and people from all walks of life, he said.

Dr. Zahid made the remarks while speaking at a winter clothes distribution programme for poor and orphaned students, organised by the Hakimpur upazila and municipality BNP units in Dinajpur on Saturday.

"If anyone tries to monopolize the achievements of the July uprising, it will not succeed. BNP leaders and activists played an active role at all levels, and the people of the country stand with them," he said.

"People from all classes, professions, political leaders, and activists participated in this mass uprising. The dictatorship fled the country on 36th July (5th August), and that was a victory for all," he added.
