The Dhaka University (DU) administration has decided to frame charges against four professors of the Department of Sociology and form a probe committee over their alleged roles during the July 2024 mass uprising.

The accused teachers are Prof Jinat Huda, Prof AKM Jamal Uddin, Prof Sadeka Halim, and Prof Mashiur Rahman-- all known as pro-Awami League academics.

The decision was taken at the meeting of the university's highest policy-making body, the Syndicate, held on Thursday.

Vice-Chancellor Prof Niaz Ahmed Khan, who presided over the meeting, confirmed the matter.

"We have taken the allegations into consideration and decided to frame charges against them. An investigation committee has been formed. Each of the accused will be allowed to nominate a representative to present their defence before the committee," he said.

The VC added that the process is at an initial stage. "This is the first step. Based on the investigation committee's report, decisions such as temporary suspension or further actions will be taken. The names of the committee members will be disclosed later," he said.

Earlier, the four professors were accused of taking positions against students during the July 2024 anti-discrimination student movement.
