FE REPORT | July 07, 2020 00:00:00

Government has appointed three lawyers, including a chief special public prosecutor, to conduct the trial of the murder case of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) student Abrar Fahad.

The lawyers are-- Chief Special Public Prosecutor Mosharraf Hossain Kajol, two special public prosecutors Ehsanul Haque Samaji and Abu Abdullah Bhuiyan.

Considering the importance of the case, the law ministry on July 02 appointed the three-member panel to conduct the trial of the case, now pending with the Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 of Dhaka, smoothly.

Mosharraf Hossain Kajol said they will talk soon to the concerned court for starting the trial proceedings of the case.

Abrar Fahad, a second-year-student of the university's electrical and electronic engineering department, was beaten to death allegedly by some BCL leaders between 10.00 pm on October 06 and 2:00 am on October 07 in 2019.

The incident triggered a firestorm of protests on campuses across the country. Many took to the social media to demand justice for Abrar.

Law enforcers suspect that Abrar was attacked because of one of his Facebook posts, which seemed critical of some recent deals with India.

Later, Abrar's father Barkat Ullah filed a murder case against 19 people with the Chawkbazar Police Station.

On November 13, 2019, Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police submitted the charge-sheet in murder case accusing 25 students of BUET, most of whom were reportedly BCL (Bangladesh Chhatra League) men.

Investigation Officer of the case, Inspector Md Wahiduzzaman, submitted the charge sheet at the general register office of the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate court of Dhaka.

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Kaiserrul Islam on November 18, 2019 accepted the charge-sheet and issued arrest warrant against four fugitive accused as the investigation officer showed them absconding in the charge sheet. Later, one of the absconded accused surrendered at the court.
