Govt now trying to hold dummy UZ polls: BNP

FE REPORT | April 26, 2024 00:00:00

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) said on Thursday that the government was trying to hold dummy upazila elections this time.

"The Prime Minister (PM) is now going to hold dummy upazila elections. And this time even Awami League (AL) leaders won't get opportunity to participate in the polls. Local people are becoming hostage in the hands of the ministers and MPs' relatives," he said.

He came up with the remarks while distributing bottled water and saline among the working class people at a programme in front of the party's Nayapaltan central office in the capital.

"Every constituency is now being controlled by MPs -- the dummy MPs. The whole area of each constituency is becoming hostage to the rule of the MPs," he continued.

He criticised the government for building coal-fired power plants in Golachipa and Bauphal of Patuakhali district.

Mr Rizvi said that local experts and scientists had asked the government not to produce power by using coal but the government took the anti-people project.

He claimed that former President and founder of BNP late Ziaur Rahman had withdrawn the rationing system after making the country self-reliant.

"The country's economy has become fragile due to looting (by the ruling class). This government has again introduced the rationing system despite talking about self-reliance. The general people are not within the purview of this rationing, the Awami League has even politicised this rationing card too," he maintained.

He said that people could not maintain their families due to soaring prices of essential commodities.

Mr Rizvi wondered how a section of influential people of the ruling clique earned billions of taka and became owners of houses in Canada, Malaysia and Dubai.
