Awami League central leader and former Home Minister Mohammad Nasim Wednesday urged the opposition not to stay off the Jatiya Sangsad (JS) on the plea of a trivial issue, reports BSS.
"If you don't attend parliament today, it will be proved that you had joined the sessions only to retain membership, draw salaries and perks," he said pointing at the opposition.
Nasim was speaking at a discussion at Dhaka Reporters' Unity. Banga-bandhu Sangskritik Jote organised the meeting marking the 42nd Independence and National Day with its acting president film actor Faruque Ahmed in the chair.
Vice-president of Bangladesh Krishak League Sheikh Md Jahangir Alam and Jote leaders Dilara Yasmin and Danny Sidak also spoke at the meeting.
Nasim said that there would not be any benefit in launching movement for retaining the caretaker government (CG) system, as the next national election would be held under an interim government.
"If you have any proposal about the interim government, raise it in parliament and then a decision can be worked out through discussions between the two political parties," he said drawing attention of the BNP-led opposition.
"Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina believes in the practice of democracy and that's why we don't want to hold the general election excluding any party," the senior Awami League (AL) leader said claiming that while in power, the AL never organised voter-less election.
Turning to the ongoing trial of the war criminals, he said the trial will be held on the sacred soil of Bangladesh as the government of Sheikh Hasina initiated the trial.
