Speaker blames past policy for Tipaimukh Dam fallout

In a strong remark regarding the Tipaimukh Dam on the Barak River upstream in India, Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed on Wednesday said Bangladesh itself bears responsibility for the consequences linked to the project.
Speaking during the question-and-answer session in parliament, he said, "We ourselves invited our own destruction."
He claimed that the project was implemented in India following a request from then Bangladesh Foreign Minister Abdus Samad Azad.
The remarks came after Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Abdul Awal Mintoo responded to a supplementary question raised by Sylhet-3 MP M A Malik.
