Prime Minister's adviser for the Ministry of Finance and Planning Rashed Al Mahmud Titumir on Wednesday said the government is committed to safeguarding national interests while pursuing deeper economic engagement with the US, amid the widespread discussions over the reciprocal trade agreement.
Talking to the newsmen after a meeting with a visiting US delegation at his office in the Bangladesh secretariat, Mr Titumir addressed concerns that the agreement may disproportionately favour Washington over Dhaka.
He said the present government has inherited a "distressed economy" and is now focusing on diversification, enhancing competitiveness, and boosting productivity.
"We believe in expanding our export base and strengthening trade relations with multiple countries," he said, adding that negotiations with the United States are part of a broader strategy to widen Bangladesh's global trade footprint.
Mr Titumir underscored that the government respects all signed agreements but noted that built-in provisions allow periodic consultations.
"Both sides have agreed today to explore mechanisms that can enhance cooperation, particularly in diversification, competitiveness, and productivity growth," he said.
Responding to a question as to whether any clauses in the agreement could be reviewed, the adviser reiterated that Bangladesh would always prioritise its national interests.
On sectoral cooperation, Mr Titumir highlighted potential collaboration in pharmaceuticals, noting opportunities to expand exports in the sector.
He pointed out US's strengths in technology and innovation, suggesting those could help Bangladesh improve productivity and competitiveness.
Refuting the concerns that the tariff agreement could limit Bangladesh's trade relations with other countries, he said Bangladesh does not believe in exclusive partnerships.
"We pursue inclusive relationships," he said, citing ongoing engagements with countries across regions, including Europe and Asia.
