Healthy Bangladesh convener Hossain Zillur Rahman has proposed a 'SDG Champion' competition for Bangladesh district and upazila towns.

His proposal came at a press briefing of the Prerona (district dialogues) programme after a visit held at Jhenaidah pourashava recently, according to a statement.

The two-day visit by eminent citizens on August 12-13 highlighted the stark challenges faced by secondary cities beset with poor healthcare and rising healthcare cost burden, new sanitation disposal challenges such as fecal sludge management, livable housing for the growing number of urban poor and poor condition of school health.

The encouraging finding is that if local governments take the lead in engaging communities in solving the emerging challenges, viable solutions can emerge.

Jhenaidah is pioneering a number of innovative solutions that offer important lessons for national policy-makers. Healthy Bangladesh team will facilitate this micro-macro lesson-learning.

Hossain Zillur was leading a high-profile Healthy Bangladesh team that included Gano Shashtahya Kendra founder Dr. Zafrullah Chowdhury, former Health Secretary A.M.M. Nasiruddin, former Director General of Health Dr. Abul Faiz, BRAC Vice-Chair Dr. Mushtaque Chowdhury, WaterAid Country Representative Dr. Khairul Islam, CIPRB director Dr. Fazlur Rahman, Everest winners Nishat Majumdar and M.A. Mohit and Md. Abdul Baten, president of Municipal Association of Bangladesh (MAB).

Power and Participation Research Centre (PPRC) co-organised the event with Jhenaidah pourashava. Jhenaidah DC Zakir Hossain and civil surgeon Dr. Rasheda Sultana joined the team during their visit to the Jhenaidah sadar hospital.

Mr Zillur noted that the next grass-root visit under the Prerona programme, which is supported by USAID/HFG, will be held in Bhairab.
